It was lovely to see a GP so supportive of breastfeeding! Like many other women in our society, I struggled with breastfeeding. But with support from the Australian Breastfeeding Association, I was able to get through the rough patch and am now still breastfeeding my 20 month old. With a history of allergies, eczema and asthma in my family, it was important to me to provide the best start for my little guy. And so far, he has shown no sign of allergies, skin problems or breathing difficulties. It was worth the effort!

Breastfeeding is the natural, normal way to feed our babies. The same as normal childbirth is the preferance over ceasarian birth. Just as pregnancy requires some management and during our first experience it can all seem new and sometimes scary, so can breastfeeding however with encouragement, up to date information and support most new mums can breastfeed their new babies. ............................................. .......... ............................................................................................................................... If things dont seem to be going well, mother to mother support that the Australian Breastfeeding Association offers can be invaluable. ABA's vision and emphasis is that all mothers feel comfortable to breastfeed exclusively for six months and then with the addition of family foods for two years and beyond.................................................................................................................................................................................. Sometimes a consulation with a health professional in the field of Lactation ie an IBCLC certified Lactation Consultant is worthwhile, especially considering the difference between a consultation fee and the cost of purchasing formula for the first twelve months of babies life......................... .............................. Mothers who claim ABA makes them feel guilty, can start to recognise and realise just as we learnt and accepted that babies are safer in car seats and changed our ways even though we were brought up being held on our mothers lap, and nothing bad happened to us, now we are learning that babies who are fed artificial baby milk usually made from manufactured cows milk formula are disadvantaged, so we need to change our behaviour and adapt to the new knowledge. ...... This doesnt mean that mothers who in the past used formula are bad, just as it didnt mean that mothers who used to drive with unrestrained infants were bad, when we knew no better.
